The UAE Is Testing Payments That Remove Both the Card and the Phone
A UAE Central Bank proof of concept lets users authenticate payments with their face or palm at Dubai Land Department. The technology changes the payment interface itself, but it remains a controlled pilot rather than a nationwide payment method.

The UAE biometric-payment pilot changes the physical payment experience by making the user's face or palm the authentication credential, but it remains a proof of concept rather than a generally available payment rail.
The next payment interface being tested in the UAE removes something that even mobile wallets still require: a device.
The Central Bank of the UAE introduced a biometric payment proof of concept using facial and palm recognition, allowing a user to authenticate a transaction without presenting a physical card or smartphone.
The system is being demonstrated at Dubai Land Department through the Central Bank's Sandbox Programme and Innovation Hub, with Network International enabling the solution and PopID providing the underlying biometric technology.
This changes the checkout interface
Contactless cards and mobile wallets made payment faster by reducing the amount of physical interaction required at checkout.
Biometric payments move the authentication step again. The user's body becomes the credential used to approve the transaction.
That creates a very different consumer experience: there may be no wallet, card or phone to retrieve, unlock or tap.
Convenience creates a different security problem
Biometric credentials are not equivalent to a password.
A compromised password can be replaced. A person's face or palm cannot be changed in the same way.
That makes enrollment, biometric-template protection, false-match controls, consent and fallback authentication important parts of the payment experience rather than back-end details.
The UAE Central Bank's broader technology guidance already treats biometrics as an authentication tool that financial institutions must deploy within appropriate security controls.
The most important word is pilot
The current system is a proof of concept in a controlled environment.
That distinction matters. The announcement does not mean residents can walk into ordinary UAE shops today and routinely pay with their face or palm.
No nationwide rollout timetable was announced with the original pilot.
What Arabian Current is watching
Watch whether biometric payments move beyond Dubai Land Department, which merchants or government services adopt them, how users enroll and revoke credentials, and what happens when biometric authentication fails.
Card and mobile-wallet payments still required the user to carry and present a payment device or credential.
A Central Bank sandbox pilot is testing transactions authenticated directly through facial or palm biometrics.
The real test is broader deployment, including merchant adoption, biometric enrollment, security controls and fallback processes when recognition fails.
